Toxins - The Gabriel Method

Jon Gabriel talks about how our bodies store toxins in our fat cells and how it stops our bodies from burning fat.

What are you doing to detoxify your body? Comment below.

How to Live a ‘Detoxification Lifestyle’

Watch this video to Discover:

  • How to create a lifestyle in which you are gently cleansing and detoxing your body on a daily basis
  • How toxins contribute to weight gain and it’s effects on your body
  • What type of toxins you and your family may be exposed to on a daily basis
  • The pros and cons of detoxing and cleansing your body
  • How to properly prepare for a detox and live a detoxifying lifestyle
Back in 2006 when I wrote my book The Gabriel Method, I talked a lot about how toxins can cause your body to hold onto weight. At the time it was a radical notion, but it’s now become generally accepted that toxins are a major impediment to losing weight.
Our body stores toxins in our fat cells. So if you’re taking in more toxins each day than you are eliminating, your body will resist burning fat. Why? Because burning fat will dump even more toxins into your bloodstream and make it even harder to detoxify.
Toxins also cause inflammation, excessive growth of unfriendly bacteria in your intestines, leaky gut syndrome, fatty liver syndrome and other side effects all of which turn ON your FAT Programs.
In recent years, detoxing has become very trendy. But there’s definitely a right way and a wrong way to do it. What I recommend prior to doing any type of detoxification program is to start living a detoxification lifestyle.
A detoxification lifestyle means taking less toxins in each day that you are eliminating. You can achieve this by drinking green juices (to help flush out your systems), eating fermented veggies, eating live vibrant non-processed detoxifying foods, taking digestive enzymes and probiotics, and increasing your water intake.
For a full explanation of how to live a detoxification lifestyle watch the video above.
By living a detoxification lifestyle, your body will get healthier over time and no longer crave the processed junk food that you might currently be eating. Slowly the inflammation goes away, the unfriendly bacteria get replaced with friendly bacteria, leaky gut gets repaired, your liver regains the ability to burn fat and it becomes so much easier to let go of weight.
You may want to also consider joining us for the upcoming Gabriel Method Detox program. A detox can be the perfect way to give your body the time it needs to heal, recuperate, re-energise and jumpstart your weight loss.
A detox that’s done the right way can take years of your life, reset your hormones and make it so much easier to lose weight and keep it off. But the trick is, it has to be done correctly.

10 Signs You Need A Detox

10 signs you need a detox V2
“Detox” may have become a trendy buzzword, but it’s an absolutely necessary aspect you must add to your health regimen. If you ignore detox, you’re missing the boat and your health will suffer. Learn the signs you need a detox. With excessive toxin exposure and stress, our natural detox pathways can become compromised. In this article, I tell you how to clean up your liver and your body.
If you have a lack of energy, brain fog or are suffering from a chronic disease or condition, I guarantee you that toxin accumulation is contributing to the problem.
I learned about detox when I was planning my pregnancy many years ago.  Reading the baby books, I was shocked by all the chemicals you had to remove from the baby’s environment and realized I was completely surrounded by chemicals in the air, food and water. This education as a scary wake up call and I realized the dire importance of removing toxins from your environment and from your body.
Anyone that thinks that detox is not important or bogus – ahem, the mainstream medical community – are not serving their patients or their own bodies. It is foolish to think that you can escape the 80,000 chemicals that we have in our environment unscathed. You must be thinking about detox on a daily basis. Allow me to explain how.

10 Signs You Need a Detox

If you have 4 or more of these signs, you may have a congested liver that needs a vacation. How many of these signs you’ve seen in your body over the past 3 months?
  1. Headaches
  2. Increased belly or visceral fat, weight loss resistance, edema/water retention
  3. Cravings and/or blood sugar issues
  4. Overheating/excess sweating
  5. Acne, rosacea, itchy skin
  6. Fatigue unrelieved by sleep
  7. Moodiness or anger
  8. Nausea
  9. Chemical sensitivity – smelling fragrances or chemicals makes you sick
  10. Insomnia – especially waking between 2-4 a.m. That’s an angry, toxic liver.

Why Detox?

The body has a natural ability to detoxify toxins, such as heavy metals, but in today’s toxic world, this natural ability is severely compromised. Overexposure to toxins and high stress levels result in weakened digestive/detox function allowing toxins to find their way into the fat cells and brain tissue. (4)
No matter how hard you try to minimize your exposure to chemicals and toxins, they keep showing up in our bodies in increased levels simply because they are everywhere in our environment. The need for detoxification is based upon the principle that immunodeficiency, inflammatory and degenerative diseases from allergies to arthritis to Alzheimer’s result from the toxic, accumulative effects of poisonous substances and pathogens within the body.
According to reports by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), the average person now has 212 environmental chemicals in their blood – things like mercury, lead, cadmium and industrial chemicals. The World Health Organization has studies that show we have over 700 chemicals on average in our bodies. No matter which study you choose, the prognosis is grim.
Mercury has found its way into organic produce from the coal mine plumes that cover most of America. And then there are all the countries in the world that do not regulate corporate dumping effectively – the rest of the world then suffers their industrial waste spewed into the atmosphere (China).
Environmental toxins such as pesticides, preservatives, heavy metals and industrial toxins are mostly fat soluble or “lipophilic” (lipo = fat, philic = like). Such lipophilic toxins have been associated with hormone disruption, immune system suppression, reproductive disorders, cancer and other diseases. (4,5,6,7)
Heavy metal and chemical toxicity, combined with nutrient depletion and stress = disease. Believe me, you need to nourish, detox and cleanse to enjoy good health.

How Your Liver Detoxes

There are three key detox pathways that your hard-working liver is organized around: phase I, phase II and phase III.
Very simply, phase I is oxidation, whereby your liver utilizes oxygen and enzymes to remove toxins by making them soluble in water, so they can be excreted in your urine and poop. Of these 100 enzymes, each has a type of chemical that it detoxifies. Phase 1 is essential to detox, but there’s some risk involved: sometimes the metabolites or broken down parts of these chemicals are worse than the parent. That’s where phase II comes in.
Phase II reactions conjugate (attach) the toxin to other water-soluble substances to increase its solubility. Each of the different types of phase II enzymes catalyzes a different type of conjugation reaction. This is necessary to remove the metabolites. Conjugation is how your liver combines oxidized metabolites with sulfur, glutathione, methylation, glucuronidation (drug detox), by adding certain amino acids or organic acids.
Phase III detoxification involves the transport of the transformed, conjugated toxin into or out of cells. Different phase III transport proteins work in concert to shuttle toxins from different parts of the body into bile or urine for excretion.
Here’s the tricky part: most environmental toxins overactivate in phase I, and then exceed the capacity of your liver to complete the detoxification in phase II. In other words, you develop excess phase I and slow phase II. When that happens, you generate signs of toxicity, such as those above.
Additionally, Phase II is impeded if you’re vegan or vegetarian or don’t eat the sulphur-containing amino acids found in meat. Ever notice how you have stinky gas after you eat red meat? Well, that’s all the sulphur your body needs to detox. You can get some sulphur-containing amino acids in cruciferous vegetables, but not enough. This is why vegans and vegetarians do still get cancer and other diseases related to toxicity. The Phase II detoxification pathway of their liver does not work very well.
Your liver needs a break! The chances are pretty good that your liver is OVERWHELMED given our levels of environmental toxin exposure and stress. We need to give it a helping hand. Here’s how:

Give your Liver a break!

Here are a few recommendations to unburden your poor liver.  It is essential to have a strong digestive system and well-functioning detox pathways – these can be achieved with intelligent cleansing techniques that are backed by science.

1. Consume Minerals and Antioxidants

21XYI4QGNKLHere’s why we need antioxidants. For every molecule of toxin metabolized in phase I (such as from cigarette smoke or pesticides), you generate one free radical molecule. Free radicals damage DNA and accelerate wear and tear in the body, similar to rust on a car. Taking vitamin C and E, Alpha lipoic acid, flavonoids, carotenoids, and glutathione helps neutralize the free radicals you’re making each day in phase I.
Want to get antioxidants from your food? Foods rich in flavonoids: berries, parsley, onions, green and black tea, citrus, and dark chocolate. Carotenoids? Get them from carrots, pumpkin, squash, plantains, spinach, and sweet potato. Also try green juice and wheatgrass juice.
OWH004_XlStudies suggest that turmeric protects the body from heavy metals like mercury, as well as help the body detoxify them. Turmeric also supports optimal digestive function, healthy intestinal flora, stable moods and comfortable movement of the joints. In one study, turmeric was found to have a protective effect from the free radical damage from mercury. Turmeric was shown to boost the body’s detoxifiers, glutathione and super oxide dismutase (SOD) levels, which protect the liver from mercury. Turmeric also boosted enzymes like catalase in the liver, kidneys and brain, supporting detox. In the study, mercury concentrations were reduced as a result of turmeric supplementation before and after mercury exposure. (3)
Another favorite supplement of mine is Liver Maintenance by Physiologics. This unique formula combines the potent herb Milk Thistle, with Dandelion plus Alpha Lipoic Acid. Alpha Lipoic Acid acts as a universal antioxidant to help neutralize cell-damaging free radicals in both the water-soluble and fat-soluble compartments in the cell. Milk Thistle possesses antioxidant properties that may help neutralize cell-damaging free radicals, while stimulating nucleolar polymerase A, to support ribosomal protein synthesis within the liver. The standardized silymarin within milk thistle also helps to support the structure of the outer cell membrane of the hepatocytes while simultaneously helping to rejuvenate the liver hepatocytes.

sauna space infrared sauna2. Get in an Infrared Sauna

Infrared Saunas are THE most effective way of detoxing metals and chemicals from your fat. I prefer near infrared saunas over far infrared, but both are great for detoxification. Get a Near Infrared Sauna. Learn more about Infrared Saunas.
These saunas have many health benefits, including cancer treatment and prevention, detoxification, killing infections like parasites, yeast, and mold, etc.
In one study, they concluded that:
“Saunas can be used very effectively for certain cardiovascular problems and as a means to enhance the mobilization of fat-soluble xenobiotics. When saunas are used to reduce blood pressure and enhance blood flow and cardiac functioning, only short sauna (15 minutes) are necessary. When one wants to enhance the mobilization of heavy metals and chemical xenobiotics, longer sessions are needed. But, for either use, saunas are safe and effective and should be used more frequently to benefit the health of our patients and ourselves.” (1)
By sweating toxins out through your skin, they bypass the need to be detoxed by the liver and you take a large burden off of the liver. Do a daily near infrared sauna and your liver will thank you.

3. Simple Daily Detox

I have found that Zeolite is one of the easiest and best ways to detox if you cannot afford the time or expense of a rigorous detox program. Zeolite removes toxic heavy metals, chemicals, VOC’s, radioactive toxins and free radicals without removing vital nutrients. You just spray it in your mouth and let the detox begin!
The Clinoptilolite Zeolite molecule is shaped like a honeycomb, full of cavities and channels. Because zeolite carries a natural negative (-) charge, all of the positively charged (+) toxins bond with the zeolite. The zeolite particles, with the toxic materials attached are then flushed from your body with your urine within 4-6 hours. Get Zeolite.

4. Eat Your Veggies

Broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower and brussels sprouts contain sulphur, which help you reduce estrogen dominance and support both phase I and phase II detoxification. You also need their fiber to remove heavy metals from your colon!

5. Reduce Alcohol

Alcohol affects and harms both phase I and phase II detox pathways. Women who drink 3 to 6 servings of alcohol per week have a 15 percent greater risk of breast cancer compared to nondrinkers, according to the Nurses’ Health Study. This is because your liver metabolizes excess estrogen. And if you can’t get rid of that excess estrogen, you’re going to have weight gain and potentially even cancer. I recently found out I have a gene that interferes in my ability to metabolize excess estrogen. Luckily, I stopped drinking alcohol on a regular basis 6 years ago! Even low levels of alcohol confer risk. Alcohol should not be in your detox plan!

6. Cleanse your Liver

There are a couple ways you can actually mechanically clean out your liver. I personally LOVE coffee enemas and liver flushes and cannot recommend them highly enough! Coffee enemasprovide a means for your liver to ‘dump’ its toxic load of chemicals and heavy metals into the intestines for elimination.
Coffee enemas are superior to plain water enemas, as they provide so many more benefits. The theobromine, theophylline, palmitic acid and caffeine in the coffee travel via the rich capillary bed of the rectum into the portal vein, which leads directly to the liver. These substances dilate blood vessels and open up the bile ducts allowing the liver to release bile, which contains toxins.
Doctors at the University of Minnesota showed that coffee administered rectally also stimulates an enzyme system in the liver, which increases glutathione, the master antioxidant in the body, by 600%-700% above normal activity levels. This antioxidant reacts with free radicals (which cause cell damage) in the bloodstream and makes them inert. These neutralized substances become dissolved in the bile, are released through the bile flow from the liver and gallbladder, and are excreted through the intestinal tract.
While holding the coffee enema in the colon for 10-15 minutes, the body’s entire blood supply passes through the liver 4-5 times, carrying poisons picked up from the tissues. So the enema acts as a form of dialysis of the blood across the gut wall. It’s an amazing way to assist the body to detox in our very toxic world. Learn how to do a Coffee Enema.
Liver flushes. The liver-gall bladder flush is a great method to deeply cleanse the liver and help remove gallstones.  It can also help remove stones in the liver itself. Flush ’em with either a deep or quick liver flush! This flush can really help to give your liver a boost in detoxing your body.

What is detoxification and how can it help your skin?
Every day we are exposed to toxins in our air, water, food and personal products. Examples of these chemicals are pesticides (in our food, lawns and parks), solvents (in gasoline, paints and cleaning products) and plastic chemicals (such as BPA and phthalates). We can do our best to live free of these substances, but some are unavoidable.
The good news is that we do have organs of elimination and detoxification that work hard to clear these from our bodies. When it comes to detoxification, the most important organs are the skin, lymphatic system, digestive system, liver, and the kidneys. The liver is the primary detoxification organ in the body. It protects the rest of the body from harmful substances by reducing their toxicity and making them ready for excretion.
When the liver and other organs involved in detoxification aren’t working properly, it can cause a build up of toxins in the body. This also happens when we’re exposed to more toxins than our body can handle. When there are excess levels of toxins, we can notice it in our bodies –skin rashes and itching, fatigue, headaches, body aches, and even weight gain are some of the symptoms people notice.
What does detoxification have to do with hormones?
The liver is responsible for metabolizing hormones (breaking them down so they can be properly eliminated and maintain balance). In addition, estrogen-mimicking chemicals found in day to day products such as in many skincare ingredients and plastics should also be eliminated by the liver.
Therefore, supporting the liver is one of the most important and essential parts of treating hormonal imbalance. If the liver is congested, fatty or overtaxed, ALL the good things you are doing won’t be very effective until that liver is cleansed and balanced. If you have hormonal acne, this is particularly important for you.
What is a cleanse?
Our bodies get out of balance over time—our hormones, digestion, and nutrition. A well-designed cleanse enhances the functions of the detoxification organs and helps us regain balance. A big focus for my cleanses is enhancing phase 1 and phase 2 liver detoxification while at the same time supporting elimination via the kidneys, digestive tract and skin.
Here are 7 steps for healthy cleansing:
1.  Consume food and drinks that support detoxification.
During a cleanse, you’ll want to nourish your body well to support your liver, kidneys and colon.
Here are some of the most important foods and drinks:
  • Cruciferous vegetables(such as broccoli, cabbage, arugula and radishes)
  • Sulfur-containing foods (such as onions and garlic)
  • High fiber foods (such as fruits, veggies and legumes)
  • Antioxidant-rich foods (such as colorful fruits and veggies)
  • Herbal Teas (such as Milk Thistle, Dandelion, Burdock Root, and Yellow Dock)
2.  Avoid common reactive foods.
Eating reactive foods leads to inflammation, which can lead to a number of symptoms and diseases, including chronic skin problems such as acne and eczema.
Common reactive foods include Gluten, Dairy, Eggs, Peanuts, Soy, Caffeine, Alcohol
and Sugar. A cleanse is a great time to take a 10 – 21 day break from these foods and see for yourself how much these impact your health.
3.  Keep the exit routes clear
Ensure your bowels, kidneys, and skin are all working effectively to clear toxins released during a cleanse. For bowels, fiber is key. For kidneys, it’s essential to drink plenty of filtered water. For skin, it’s a good idea to exfoliate and ensure clean pores so you can sweat adequately and slough off dead skin.
4.  Sweat.
Exercise during a cleanse leads to lipolysis (breaking down fat cells) which also helps release toxins that are stored in our fat cells.
5.  Avoid toxins in your environment
If you’re doing a cleanse to support your body, the last thing you want to do is add more toxins to the mix. Take a close look at your air, water, food, and personal care products to see how you can reduce exposures such as eating organic, using natural cleaning products, drinking filtered water, and choosing non-toxic skincare products.
6.  Enhance detoxification with supportive cleansing techniques.
Certain supplements – herbs (such as milk thistle) and nutrients (such as glutathione) – can help phase 1 and 2 liver detoxification pathways. There are also specific hydrotherapy and massage techniques that improve blood and lymph flow.
I go into much greater detail in my Spa Cleanse Program. It’s the program that I’ve refined over the last 15 years and added at-home spa treatments to enhance the results.
7.  Cleanse emotionally.
This might seem unrelated but I find that emotional cleansing is key to a successful in depth cleanse program. Emotions come up during a cleanse, and it’s a great opportunity to work thru them. During my program, I walk people thru exercises such as meditation, breathwork and guided imagery.
Symptoms that indicate you may need detoxification support:
  • Fatigue, feeling run down
  • Skin rashes, skin itching
  • Acne (especially hormonal acne)
  • Digestion problems – bloating, constipation, diarrhea, etc.
  • Bad breath
  • Headaches
  • PMS, irregular cycles, infertility and other signs of Hormone imbalances
  • Brain fog, difficulty focusing/concentrating
  • Weight (fat) gain or inability to lose weight
  • Chronic muscle or joint pain
  • Inflammatory conditions/diseases such as eczema
Wondering where to start?
Some simple changes to your diet can be a great start for a healthy liver to keep your skin clear and body healthy. You can begin with drinking plenty of filtered water, eating colourful fruits, veggies and legumes as well as cruciferous vegetables, onions and garlic.
Show your liver and other detoxification organs some love by giving it the support it needs. This will show not only in how you feel but how your skin looks too!

Top Tips To Reduce Toxic Ingredients In Personal Care Products

Research shows that carcinogenic and hormone disrupting chemicals have been linked to a number of health problems including infertility, lower sperm counts, obesity, diabetes, thyroid imbalance, and certain types of cancers. The knowledge and information you’ll learn here will inform you and therefore help to empower you to make healthier choices for you and your family.

We are exposed to toxins on a regular basis. TOXINS are anything that can interfere with our body’s ability to function OPTIMALLY. They have a major impact on your SKIN! Your skin is the largest organ and it has many functions often not appreciated. The skin can tell you how your body is performing inside from a cellular level. So the skin is a doorway to how your body is working.

Toxic exposures

Food: Pesticides (Fungicides, herbicides, insecticides), Dirty Dozen Foods (EWG), Hormones/Antibiotics in Animal products, Additives (Aspartame, MSG, Sugar)

Outdoor Environment: Pesticides, electric power plants, factory emissions, cooling systems, and diesel fumes

Indoor Environment: Most indoor air pollution comes from sources that release gases or particles into the air. Carbon monoxide (Blocks the movement of oxygen around the body), Nitrogen dioxide (combustion pollutants- a by-product of gas fires or cookers), Flame retardants in furniture and mattresses, Radon (Radon is a radioactive gas that seeps from the soil and rocks beneath your home). Other sources are harsh solvents in cleaning products, Mould, Mildew, dust mites and Personal care products.

All of these sources of indoor air pollution can combine to create a toxic mess in the air we breathe.  The common denominator is CHEMICALS.

Dirty Dozen These are foods that are sprayed most heavily with Pesticides.

Additives are pretty much what you get in processed foods. It can throw things of metabolically and hormonally. And that’s pretty much what a toxin does.

Personal Care Products contain toxic chemicals like Parabens, SLS and Phthalates which we are going to go into more detail about.

We will Never Rid the body of all toxins BUT we can decrease our exposure and their impact.

Personal Care Products

The health and beauty industry is a business and many companies will do whatever it takes make money. Even if this includes using additives and preservatives that are not safe to put on the human body!

Many people ignore this because they are only putting these products on their skin and not ingesting them. However, this is not the case.

Did you know that your skin is the largest organ in your body and up to 60% you put ON your skin goes INTO your body!

The average woman uses about 12 products daily which contain up to 168 different  chemical ingredients. This ranges from body wash, shampoo, shaving gel, body lotion, face moisturiser, deodorant, make up, hair spray and more. The average man uses 6 products daily with 85 unique ingredients. Kids are exposed to more chemicals than adults in the environment around them including the air, water, food and personal care products. Their immune system is less capable of dealing with chemical toxins. Baby wipes containing bronopol, DMDM hydantoin and fragrance are a very big offender. Teenagers are using more personal care products now from hair gels and strengtheners to make up and tanning lotions. EWG detected16 potentially toxic chemicals including phthalates, triclosan, parabens, and musks in the blood and urine samples from 20 teenage girls. These are hormone disruptors and are carcinogenic. Teenagers are now experiencing earlier onset of puberty as a result.

Top 8 Toxic Cosmetic Ingredients to Avoid

Parabens

This is also known as Methylparaben, Propylparaben, Isoparaben, Ethylparaben, Butylparaben. These are synthetic preservatives found in many cosmetics and personal care products to inhibit microbial growth and extend the shelf life of the product. They act as oestrogen mimics and thus disrupt the hormonal system. They are known to cause rashes and allergic reactions, so not good if you have sensitive skin.

Linked to breast cancer, decreased sperm counts and precocious puberty (early onset of puberty).

Sodium Lauryl/Laureth Sulfate (SLS)

It is an inexpensive and very effective foaming agent. It is used in concrete floor cleaners, engine degreasers, car wash detergents, and just about every soap and shampoo on the market. In the same way as it dissolves the grease on car engines, sodium lauryl sulfate also dissolves the oils on your skin, which can cause a drying effect. They act as oestrogen mimics and thus disrupt the hormonal system.

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS), Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES), and Ammonium Laurel Sulfate (ALS) are in most body care products. According to the EWG review, research has shown that they put you at risk for cancer, skin irritation, and organ toxicity.

Mineral oil/ Petrolatum (Petroleum Jelly)

This is a by-product of crude oil and it is used as a very cheap emollient base ingredient. It has no nutrient value and can interfere with the body’s natural moisturising ability. It can not be absorbed by the skin and creates a film on the surface, blocking the pores and preventing the skin from its normal functioning. This petroleum by-product can causes allergies.

Synthetic Fragrance/Parfum

This is a blanket term for hidden chemicals that should be avoided. Phthalates (plasticising agent) are included in this.

Phthalates

Used to retain scent in a product. A plasticizer, used to soften plastic and makes pvc flexible. Used in skin moisturisers and skin penetration enhancers in cosmetics. Linked to cancer.

A study published in the journal Environmental Research analysed urine samples of 1040 men for 8 types of phthalates. The average age of the men was 32 – 36 years old. They each gave two samples for the study. The researchers found that the presence of phthalates in the urine was linked to poor semen quality.

Phthalates are chemical plasticisers that can sneak in almost anywhere from milk (the plastic used on the cows’ udders) to shower curtains and toiletries but you must do what you can to reduce your exposure to them. Make a habit of reading the product labels of everything you use around your home and on your body. Phthalates contain hormone disrupting effects in the body.

They smell amazing and boost your overall well-being and immunity also. Vegetable oils or carrier oils contain phytonutrients that nourish and protect your skin and fight free radicals, the precursor to pre-mature ageing and other skin diseases.
